Teaching the spirit of MLK

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
"Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of a true education."
And my personal favorite...
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
-Martin Luther King Jr.

On Martin Luther King Day last year I was two days away from giving birth and volunteering at the boys and girls club. My hours of community service have decreased drastically this past year, but my hope for a better community, a better America, a better world couldn't be stronger. These days I see my role in that process as raising my son to be a compassionate, honest, and active citizen. When he's a little older, I'm looking forward to celebrating MLK day volunteering with Finn and working toward social justice and dignity for everyone. In the meantime, I'll try hard to remember the wisdom of King and set good examples so Finnegan can easily and lovingly give back to a community who has welcomed him so warmly.
