NUMBER FOUR!

Yep. We blinked and Finn is now four years old. Celebrations were big, fun, and extended. They included a birthday party with all his new friends from school and old friends from babyhood, a trip to the children's museum in Indianapolis, and songs and birthday signs in his preschool classroom. My highlights included:
1. the look of elation on Finn's face as his friends sang to him
2. his question the day after his birthday as he was getting dressed: "why am I still small?!?!!?"
3. the wild success of his biggest present: a new bike.

And since we're making lists, here are some things Finn can do now that he could not do a year ago:
1. Write letters, recognize his written name, and color really really well. He can also recognize a few words that Clark and I spell out like Z-O-O and N-A-P. Aye. We're looking for new strategies for handling this. Suggestions welcome.
2. Hold his temper and empathize when others are having a hard time. So this one isn't always spot on, but more often than not, Finn will request "a few minutes to calm down." Seriously, those are the words he uses. And he's quick to say when faced with another grumpy toddler who's having a particularly hard time, "that kid just hasn't learned to use his words yet."
3. He's upped his game on the humor front. Last year Finn was able to truly make me belly laugh, but he's gotten SO SO SO much better at it. His humor is dry and a little sarcastic and really really funny.

And Finn isn't the only one who has grown this year. While we still lose sleep over a million parenting worries, Clark and I have learned a few things this year too. Some things we can now do that we couldn't one year ago:
1. Play real games with Finn. With Rules. And Winners. Some of my favorite times with Finn include games of memory on the coffee table. Chute and Ladders at the library. And running races on our favorite trails. We can set up challenging puzzles on the floor and work on them for 30 minutes with engaged interest. It's seriously fun.
2. Let him figure things out on his own. Finn's old enough to decide when to wear a coat and how much dinner to eat. I love that he has this kind of control over himself and makes smart decisions (most of the time).
3. I can now tell you which superheros are from DC Comics and which are Marvel. I've googled batarangs. I've pretended to by Lex Luther caught in Spiderman's web (that's not a thing, I've been corrected). This is a world I knew NOTHING about one year ago. Now I'm all in. Or getting there.

The newest tiny

After the new year, we took a trip to Denver to meet the smallest, newest family member, Chase Olesen. Chase was born November 1, 2015, so he was just barely two months old at our visit. Holy moly he's a cutie. Finn agreed wholeheartedly and loves his new role of not being the smallest. He was  excited to teach Chase how to wash hands and play with legos. I loved seeing my little sis as a mom. Both she and Bryan are handling parenting with such grace and love.
After Denver, Clark and Finn headed back to Indy, and I took a short trip to Las Vegas to meet the new twin boys of my best friend from high school. These two were the most welcoming hosts ever, giving me huge smiles and belly laughs at every greeting.
Warning: the following photos are cuteness overload.

Finn has the dazed look of a surviving new parent here. Oh the pressures of caring for a cousin!

And a little Denver site seeing

Conor and Michael. Those faces!!!

New pet?

Recently Finn realized the animals at the shelter are looking for homes, so there's been a lot of talk at our house about getting a pet. Except the kind of pets discussed to come live with us range from fish to lynx to fossa. Seriously. So...when Finn befriended a ladybug that he found by our door and asked to keep him as pet, we needed to make this work.
In case you're wondering, ladybugs eat aphids in nature, but can also survive off raisins and honey through the winter. So we built a terrarium and are now the proud owners of Climber, the ladybug. Love at first ladybug sight.

Editor's Note: At the time of publication, Finn has added an additional ladybug and one stinkbug. Climber is no longer with us.

It's a new year!

Happy new year! We spent this one celebrating big at home around a bonfire with sparklers and roasted marshmallows. On the 1st, we participated in a trail run, and it was a great start to the new year. Instead of race numbers, everyone was given a piece of tape to write down their new year's goal. I transcribed Finn's for him: "Run!...but maybe get carried sometimes." This kid knows life, huh?

MERRY

Happy new year! As I write this, we are well into 2016. We planned to keep things simple for Christmas, and looking back, I'm pleased with the outcome. Few presents, very few plans, and lots of time to enjoy our home and community. The week leading up to the big day was full of fun activities chosen each morning based on our moods.  Swimming at the Y, a day trip to Columbus Indiana to visit another children's museum and our favorite ice-cream parlor, cappuccinos and hot chocolate at coffee shops, hiking, parks, and lots of time together and with friends. This Christmas was one of my favorites since Finn's birth. It was quiet and reflective, but also full of excited anticipation and joy. We seemed to have abundant time, which is NEVER the case for us, and these days that is the best gift I could receive. Below are some photos of how we spent that time.

Created a map of our route to look at christmas lights.
